Looking at pictures of older pickup trucks, they were significantly lower to the ground. What advantage do they gain by being so high and why don’t car manufacturers sell lower ones?
Lower trucks would in theory get better gas mileage and would allow for sporty variants too. I think I would be more interested in the current truck offerings if they were more crossover height, especially the mid size ones.
If the big 3 made a performance variant at the same price point at the same price point as the King Ranch or High Country trims, they’d appeal to some of the customers who want a Camaro or Mustang and a truck.

basicly, this is what happened:
BRO. MY TRUCK IS TALLER THEN YOUR TRUCK. SO MY DICK IS BIGGER BRO
NAH BRO, MY TRUCK IS TALLER THEN YOUR TRUCK! GROUND CLEARANCE BRO!
repeat until we get to where we are today

100% this. Lower trucks would be so nice. The 0.0001% of the population that buys a truck for offroading revamps the suspension anyways. Try removing a 32ft ladder from a standard rack in a modern F150. Miserable time

Also appeal to the people who use thier trucks for work and don’t want to load a bed that’s 5 feet off the ground.
I am surprised that there haven’t been any sport trucks in the last few years though. Aren’t trucks selling like hotcakes? Isn’t “more speed” the image all brands are trying to cultivate? Well... Why not combine the two?

I wonder if everyone wanting a higher ride position to see over all the other cars “for safety” has led to a bit of an arms race in the height department.

Ride comfort + payload advantages happened.

the same thing that has always happened. people say that they want something, and when it gets produced, they just dont come through and support it....... dodge has had one going for a while, but has set the bar pretty high for anyone to even attempt to compete........

I mean, they’d sell at least as many as they do the other high trim levels, probably more. Ram is going to use the Hellcat engine in the new model, the other two have to be working on something

Is that what it’s for? Payload ratings? I’m honestly asking.
![]() 05/24/2018 at 23:21 |

Yeah, first the little red express then the Viper engine and soon the Hellcat engine. Ram knows what’s up.

I can’t even imagine what the new GT500 engine would do in an F150 lol

it mainly boils down to sharing parts. Going back to 1999 in Chevy/GMC trucks, they began sharing as many parts as possible between a 2wd and 4x4 chassis. Same springs, shocks, spindles rear axle housings, brakes etc...
This is also why you don’t see full size trucks anymore with 5 lug bolt pattern. It speeds up production and you need less special parts. Also I think they keep getting taller is to match the aftermarket in mods. The manufactures try to just add whats popular in mods to a stock vehicle, with the though of why buy a truck and then spend a bunch more money modding it when you can buy a new stock truck with all that stuff integrated. This is nothing new, the big 3 have been doing that since the 50's

A lowered 2wd RCSB sport truck doesn’t fit the ROCKSTAR RBP MONSTER ENERGY FLAT BRIM DIESEL DURACUMSTROKEMAX CREW MEGA CAB LARAMIERANCH KINGDENALI lifestyle that truck owners have adopted.
Seriously, though- sport trucks don’t really work for crew cabs, and people don’t buy trucks that aren’t crew cabs. I LOVE RCSB trucks... LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I don’t get to own one. I don’t get to buy a replacement for my beloved SVT Lightning that was taken from me too soon. I drive a Suburban because babies.

yes. the problem is that in order to increase payload rting and keep the height the same, the springs would have to get stiffer and stiffer. As trucks have become commuter cars, and people like their spines in one piece ride height has to increase for a longer springs.

Mmmm... we need a Lil’ Red Express with 707 hp and wide open exhaust stacks up through the bed...

Ah yes! Most sport trucks are standard cab! I forgot about that. I bet if they made crew cab versions, we’d still have them around.
To that end though, why aren’t they doing just that and raking in money?

Makes sense. And no one would want to admit that they’ll never approach the payload rating in their truck but they want more capability than the last generation.
Is it hard to lower a new truck to a more reasonable height?

The 2.7L Ecoboost in a big Supercrew body will out accelerate that Lighting.

Ride comfort is thrown out the window when they proceed to install 20" wheels with rubber band tires.....

And they offered them in extended cab too.

That’s the only truck I would ditch my old Dakota RT for. Especially with a 6-speed.

I wonder this all the time too. I’m not going to lie one of the first thing that I do whenever someone releases a new truck model is to “shop” it lower, just it to see how it would look, and it’s almost always an improvement.
I apologize for the quality of these, most of them were done with Powerpoint since that the closest thing I have to image editing software on my work computer.

There’s a handful of dealers are making sport trucks. One is the “Earthquake Edition”.
I like this one, and I might be the only one because it’s been on eBay for at least a year.

Pioneer Ford also makes and sells their own idea of a 2018 Lightning.
No one wants a standard cab truck. The seating position sucks, everyone wants to be able to recline the seatback a little bit.

Close but about 2-3 in lower would make it perfect.

You clearly haven’t ridden in a modern truck. Chances are, if it has 20's, there still is 10" of rubber on it. Trucks are faaaaarrrrrr more comfortable than they used to be, along with having higher payloads. On top of that, they handle significantly better. Trucks are much, much easier to drive and live with than they used to be.

No, you can still slam them if you want.

I have the opposite view, always have. I guess then they won’t be used as trucks? You put a load in a lowered truck and you have a problem, also no clearance. So you want a car with a bed? Sorry I like trucks and using them, I hate seeing a lowered truck that nobody puts anything in, why get it? That Honda can’t really carry a lot anyway, the bed is good for garden stuff and throwing wet crap from the beach in, so I guess it’s ok, it’s really an open back SUV.
